Jesus, even the greatest

The author of Hebrews emphasizes the point over and over again. He wants his readers to hear the message over and over again: There is no one like Jesus. He is the biggest. There is no one like Him in the entire universe.

Do you see Jesus like that too? Well, after looking at all its different characteristics recently, our image of Jesus cannot be the same! God Himself elevated him to the highest place of honor in the universe.

13And did you ever say something like that to an angel? Sit next to me here on my throne until I put your enemies on a stool for your feet. 14Is it not obvious that all angels are sent to help those who are lined up to receive salvation?

Why would He who sits on the highest place in the world have enemies? Because darkness does not like light. The devil doesn’t like good things. Delights in evil. He breaks. He wants to give love a bloody nose. Jesus comes and stops him.

That infuriates the devil and he wants to get rid of Jesus. That is why he tempted Jesus in the desert right at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, to put him on the side of the devil.

More enemies appeared along the way. Kings, Sadducees and Pharisees. Even the church of the time wanted to get rid of Him.

But the devil and his cronies misjudged the One with whom they were getting involved. Jesus is the strongest and the greatest. Even bigger than the angels. Those who do not give Jesus his rightful place in the universe will be no more than Jesus’ footstool, so they will have little value.

Jesus is also greater than the angels. Angels are servants of God. They work for God. They support people and help them throughout their lives. Angels understand people’s needs and have great empathy with them. They will do everything possible to help people hear the message of salvation and make it a part of their lives.

Angels are at the service of God and on our side. They are there to protect us from the attacks of the devil. Since Jesus was attacked by the devil, why would we now escape such attacks? Angels are sent to help us win this battle.

God has this whole army of angels and yet He did not tell even one of them that there is a place of honor next to Him where He reigns as King over the entire universe. He only told Jesus. And this alone says a lot about Jesus, who He is and how much power He has.

Let us fall to our knees and know who Jesus is. Let us honor him as God, as Savior. It is completely another.

Hebrews 1: 5-14

Reflection

How is your image of Jesus?

Do you give it enough glory?

How do you need to adjust your image of Jesus?

Pray

Lord Jesus, how wonderful it will be to kneel before your throne in heaven one day! I don’t have a frame of reference to glorify a King with the necessary fear. Show me how I can properly honor you here on earth. Amen.
