A characteristic gesture reaches a point where it defines you, because you have become very easily identifiable by them. A signature gesture is a gesture by which you have made yourself known, a common gesture that you perform in a particular way. There are as many characteristic gestures as there are individuals, and they come in a very wide variety. Some people play with their hair, others suck their thumb, pat their eyebrows, show a certain look, gaze or smile, etc.

A characteristic gesture is what differentiates you from others, and at the same time gives clues about your personality. Various examples of characteristic gestures can be seen in a person’s smile, posture, clap, pointing finger, or any other repeated action in their body language. And by learning to recognize the signature, you can tell what kind of person you’re dealing with. For example, certain gestures, such as clapping your hands once, show an organized mind, while hair-twirling gestures generally indicate that the person is a dreamer.

Pay close attention to the details of a person’s behavior. Observe the body language of your friends, partners, co-workers or just acquaintances. They all have a signature, and if you pay attention, they should be pretty easy to spot. When you successfully read the signs, they will give you insight into their personality and help you figure out how best to handle the person.

However, signing gestures do not always provide accurate information. More explicitly, if a person uses a false and artificial gesture as his signature, it will only indicate what he wants to suggest or look like, but will not necessarily reveal a real trait of his personality. For example, we can take the famous posture of Napoleon Bonaparte. The portrait of him depicts him in a powerful pose, on the canvas. With his hand tucked into his vest, he reveals pride and authority. However, we don’t know if he was ever actually in that position, it could very well just be an image created by the artist.

Simply put, signature gestures are gestures that are unique and personalized to a certain individual. We all have them, whether we realize it or not. If you are not aware of your signature gesture, you can ask your close friends, and they will surely find plenty of them, instinctive gestures that you never thought of. They belong to you whether you like it or not, and they will be automatically associated with you.
