The Mandela effect: two different versions of reality

The Mandela effect basically states that hundreds, thousands, even millions of totally unrelated people remember, a shared memory, to the point of leading to the Bible that some identical event or series of related events that never happened actually did happen. It gets its name from the sincere belief that thousands of people have that they really remember through the news (newspapers, TV news, etc.) the story that Nelson Mandela died in prison, when in fact he did not, although there are still those who he claims they have evidence, including evidence of Mandela’s death in prison. When I first came across this track, I thought it was just a bunch of New Age woo-woo. That is until I was given an example that caught me absolutely believing that a quick fact check would have proven me wrong. So here is the example and a question. In the Bible (speaking of the Bible), what animal is said to actually lie down with the lamb?

If you answered, as I did, that the answer was “the lion”, you would be wrong.

Isaiah 11:6 – “The wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the kid; and the calf and the lion and the fattened animal will be together, and a child will lead them.”

Isaiah 65:25 – “The wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like the calf, and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will do no harm or harm in all my holy mountain, says the Lord.”

Interestingly, numerous religious-themed illustrations/paintings/artworks can be found showing a lion lying down with a lamb, and not a wolf. Also, I must not fail to mention hundreds of references/quotes to the Lamb/Lion cut, as well as several dozen place names that refer to the Lion and the Lamb.

Also, apparently many millions of people, including myself, believed that the evangelical Christian Billy Graham was long dead. not so As of October 16, 2017, Billy Graham was still alive! Whoops!

There is seemingly no end to examples of common beliefs that have no real basis in fact. The question arises, why is this so? While each and every human has many false memories, they are, or should be, quite unique to that individual. But when certain false memories are shared among hundreds, thousands, even millions of people, that’s much, much more abnormal. Could one answer be that, as simulated beings, we have been implanted with memories, not all of which are accurate? We know that memories can be faulty, but when lots and lots of people share the same faulty memory, then one needs to sit down and try to figure out what’s really going on.

Examples:

Many people have a memory of X when they really should have a memory of Y. But what if X once was the correct memory but now it isn’t? Something is wrong somewhere.

* In “Star Wars” C-3PO is completely gold?

* In “Star Wars”, is Darth Vader’s quote 1) Luke, I am your father” or is it “No, I am your father”? [It’s actually “No, I am your father”. Note, even the actor who voiced the lines in several later interviews gets it entirely wrong!]

* In Disney’s “Snow White”, does the evil queen say 1) “Mirror, mirror on the wall” or is it “Magic mirror on the wall”? [It’s “Magic mirror” by the way.]

* In “Field of Dreams” is the quote “If you build it, he will come” or is it “If you build it, they will come”? [It’s actually “he will come” not “they will come”.]

* Is the title “Sex in the City” or is it “Sex and the City”? [It’s “Sex and the City” though you’ll find numerous references and citations to “Sex in the City”.]

* In “Forest Gump”, is it “Life is like a box of chocolates” or “Life was like a box of chocolates”?

* In “Jaws” is it “We’re going to need a bigger boat” or is it “You’re going to need a bigger boat”? [Apparently it is “You’re going to need a bigger boat”.]

* Is it “Interview with the Vampire” or “Interview with a Vampire”?

* Is it “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde or “The Picture of Dorian Grey”?

* In “Apollo 13”, is it “Houston, we have a problem” or “Houston, we had a problem”?

* Is it “daylight saving time” or is it “daylight saving time”?

* What about “Smokey Bear” vs. “Smokey the bear”?

There are hundreds of other examples on the internet and while most are not that convincing, for example relatively minor changes to brand names and/or product images/logos that are more than offset by those few that are very convincing.

Biblical examples:

* The ‘Three’ Wise Men: It’s a trio of wise men who bring gifts to the baby Jesus, right? Well, actually the Bible never says the exact number.
Matthew 2:1-3 (King James Version)
“When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men came from the east to Jerusalem,
saying: Where is the king of the Jews that is born? for we have seen his star in the east, and we have come to worship him.
When King Herod heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.”

*New wine in old skins (i.e. Matthew 9:14-17; Mark 2:21-22; Luke 5:33-39) instead of New wine in old skins (which is the wording of the Wikipedia entry) . Here is part of the ‘modern’ KJV quote:
Matthew 9:17 (King James Version)
“Neither is new wine put into old skins; otherwise the skins break, and the wine runs out, and the skins are lost; but they put new wine into new skins, and both are preserved.”
This passage makes no sense since the bottles are not spoiled or broken by the addition of wine, old or new; old bottles or new bottles, but the old organic skins do.

*Womb: If there was one word I wouldn’t have expected to find in the KJV of the Bible, it would be “womb”, but it appears about five times in both Exodus and Numbers. Does anyone remember that “womb” is a biblical term when taking a Bible study class or hearing the word used or mentioned in any church sermon? I rather suspect that this is not the case. As an aside, I wouldn’t expect to find the word “Passover” in the Bible either, but it is there in Acts 12:4. Apparently the first observations of use of a Christian festival celebrating the resurrection of Jesus were in the middle of the 2nd. -Century. Modern use of the term did not originate until the 7th or 8th century and was derived from the name of an Old English goddess. Something is wrong somewhere.

* Corn: Corn is native to Mexico and began to be cultivated approximately 10,000 years ago and spread throughout most of the Americas around 2500 BC. But the plant was not introduced to the Old World/Europe until after 1492, well over a thousand years after the Bible was written. So how does the Bible (KJV) mention “corn” as early as Genesis 27? Didn’t passages mentioning “corn” used to be passages mentioning “grain”? In fact, “grain” is mentioned only 7 times in the KJV, and 5 of them have to do with mustard seeds. On the other hand, I counted 92 references to “corn” in the KJV of the Bible. “Grain” in the Bible has now become “corn.” Or maybe “corn” now refers to “cereals.” There are no references to “cereal” in the KJV. But why would the KJV translators use an impossible substitute word (ie “corn”) for “cereal” (or “grain”) that could not possibly have existed when the Bible was being compiled? Also, “corn” is much more specific than “cereal” or “grain”. By the way, there are also some 52 references to “wheat”.

* Our Father: Matthew 6:9-13 is 1) “who art in heaven” or “who art in heaven”; 2) “Thy will be done on earth” or “Thy will be done on earth”; 3) “and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” or “and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us”?
Here is the current KJV version.
Matthew 6:9-13 (King James Version)
You, then, will pray like this: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”

Does any of this seem a bit strange in terms of the wording that you actually remember? For example, I have always remembered the part that says “on earth” and not “on earth”. I also saw a TV show recently that briefly featured “The Lord’s Prayer” and referred to “infractions” and not “debts.”

[There’s also a mini version in Luke 11: 1-4 but it too mentions “in earth”.]

*This is another verse that has caused a lot of confusion and it’s not exactly how many people remember it.
Matthew 26:45-46 (King James Version)
“Then he came to his disciples, and said to them: Sleep now, and rest; behold, the hour has come, and the Son of man is delivered into the hands of sinners.
Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who will betray me is coming.”
I mean, in two consecutive verses, Jesus says to rest and then wake up, whereas before you only remembered the verses that commanded people to get up and go.

* And here is another verse that people have not remembered and are now questioning. Would Jesus really have said this as it is written? Do you remember this anomaly?
Luke 19:27 (King James Version)
“But those of my enemies who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here, and kill them before me.”

*Couchs: And why are your various references to a “couch” in the Bible (KJV) like in Acts 5:15 and Amos 6:4? The sofa as we understand the use was not written as a word until 1895 when the sofa was invented. The word itself comes from French and originated in Middle English, long after biblical times. Do you remember the layers in the Bible?

* And here is another strange verse:
Colossians 4:11 (King James Version)
“And Jesus, who is called Justus, who are of the circumcision. These alone are my co-workers in the kingdom of God, who have been a comfort to me.”
So, is Jesus also called Just? That you remember?

Explanations for the Mandela effect?

Numerous explanations have been given for the Mandela effect, starting with, of course…

* There is nothing to see here, just move.

* These memories are in a state superposition, and as we ‘observe’ our memories, we collapse the wave function into one state or the other. Some of us remember correctly or some of us don’t remember correctly.

* There are close but not yet identical parallel universes and we are passing from one to another.

* There is this idea of mass conspiracy where the powers that be are playing with our heads as a test bed for eventual “Big Brother” mind control. In fact, this whole Mandela Effect seems like a mini version of “1984” that constantly altered the official record/history so that Big Brother would never look wrong. As the novel says, “Whoever controls the past controls the future. Whoever controls the present controls the past.”

* It is only the simulation hypothesis and these are only software adjustments. Maybe it’s just part of the programmer’s version of an IQ test to see if his virtual subjects are alert enough to figure all this out.

What do you think? Is there something weird somewhere?
