Let’s say you woke up this morning and for the first time in your life announced, “I want to start acting!” Where should you go? What are you going to need? Like any other profession, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the tools of the trade and get your game plan in order. Let’s take a closer look at the things you need to focus on to start acting right now.

The good old-fashioned headshot has come a long way over the years and is still the actor’s calling card. It is like your business card. The actor’s headshot is often the first thing casting agents and directors will look at to see if they want to call you in for an audition.

If you really want to start acting, you should spend a lot of time researching this part so that you can find the perfect photographer for you. No friend with a camera, please. Do your research and find a professional head photographer in your area.

Most of today’s good photographers have their portfolios online, so you can easily pick a few that you like and make an appointment with them to see if they have chemistry together. It’s important that the two of you work well together so that he can help you bring out the best in yourself. Rule Number One to keep in mind: your headshot should look like you.

Lessons.

Most cities will have at least a few different acting classes to choose from. Regardless of what classes you end up taking, be sure to audit the acting class beforehand to make sure it’s for you. Many acting classes offer free audits for new students.

It’s just a numbers game. Build thick skin, don’t take it personally, and learn from every audition you attend to help yourself get better. Don’t beat yourself up or get angry if you think you made a mistake. There are many factors outside of our control that determine the outcome of the casting. If you do not get a position, it may be for reasons beyond your control. There will be many more acting jobs to win.
