Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil and the Steelers

I’m getting ready for another road trip back to Long Island. I hope spring isn’t too far away as these bones could use some sun.

Today I read an article published in Sports Health: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach. It’s a medical journal, and those are always pretty dry reads on the whole.

To prove my point, what I read was titled “Evaluation of Lipid Profiles and the Use of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids in Professional Soccer Players.” I’m sure most of you would have opted for a Celtics game scorecard as more interesting, but this sort of thing fascinates me. By now you may have guessed that I’m a bit of a nerd. But, everything works in your favor.

To summarize the article, 36 Steelers were given pharmaceutical-grade fish oil and then had a VAP(R) cholesterol test. The researchers looked for emerging cardiovascular risk factors and determined whether omega-3 EFAs (essential fatty acids), the kind found in pharmaceutical-grade fish oil, can reduce these factors.

During the study, each participant received 2,560 mg of DHA/EPA omega-3 fatty acid supplements.

According to Dr. James Erlich, medical director of Atherotech, a partner in the study, professional football players are statistically at higher than normal risk for future cardiovascular disease and sudden heart attacks.

Watching games these days, it’s pretty easy to see why. These guys are giants. 280 is considered “light” for a lineman and 300 pounds is now commonplace. This weight will catch up with them sooner or later. Usually before.

In the study, VAP testing verified that pharmaceutical-grade fish oil improved Steeler players’ good cholesterol and reduced harmful particulate matter and triglycerides. By the way, higher triglyceride levels are associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The pharmaceutical-grade fish oil the Steelers took may not have benefited them in the game against the Cardinals, but it surely benefits them in the much longer game of life. These guys are big, strong, tough, and a little crazy. You have to be to play professional sports.

And they die, often of heart attacks and strokes, too young. Taking pharmaceutical grade fish oil is a step in the right direction for them and I hope they continue to do so.

And pharmaceutical-grade fish oil isn’t just for 300-pounders or professional athletes. It will help virtually everyone who chooses to take it, from helping to flush arteries to stopping migraines to helping soothe joint pain.

If you want a more pleasant stay at this great hotel, get some and get some today.
