Keep moving pandemonium to a minimum by completing moving day tasks ahead of time. By doing so, you will be able to supervise the movers without worry or distraction. The following checklist will serve as a guide to tasks to complete on move-in day, delivery day, and after you arrive at your new home.
moving day
- Check cabinets, drawers, and shelves to make sure they are empty.
- Check the rooms, the attic, the garage, and the yard to make sure nothing is left.
- Bring important documents, cash and jewelry yourself, or use certified mail.
- Note all utility meter readings.
- Please read your bill of lading and inventory (provided by the mover) carefully before signing. Keep documentation in a safe place.
- Turn off the water heater and lower the thermostat.
- Get the name of the moving truck driver and give them your contact information. Review the directions to the new house.
- Have your final move-in payment and tip money.
Delivery day
- Check your belongings carefully and note any damaged items on your inventory paperwork.
- Be prepared to pay the driver before your belongings are unloaded in cash, a certified check, or traveler’s checks, unless other arrangements have been made in advance.
- Oversees unloading and unpacking.
New home
- Renew your driver’s license, car registration and tags.
- Shop for new insurance policies, especially auto coverage.
- Review your will and other legal documents to avoid a longer probate and higher legal costs.
- Locate hospitals, police stations, veterinarians, and fire stations near your home.
- Change the locks on all the doors in your new home.
