Kaziranga National Park

Home to the great Indian one-horned rhinoceros, Kaziranga National Park is one of the largest protected wildlife areas in India. It is inhabited by the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinos, as well as many mammals, including tigers, elephants, panthers and bears, and thousands of birds.

The park is located on the bank of the great Brahmaputra river in the far northeast of India. The park is located in an area of ​​430 square kilometers between the golaghat and nagaon district of Assam. It included: 51.92% grassland, 29.13% moist mixed deciduous forest, 7.21% sandy area, 6.62% water bodies, and 5.21% park swamp/swamp area.

The park was first established in 1908, as a forest reserve. It was declared a game sanctuary in 1917 and opened to the public in 1938. The park became a wildlife sanctuary in 1950 and was announced as a national park in 1974. The park was inscribed on the list of world heritage sites in December 1985. In August 2006, the park is advertised as a tiger reserve under the tiger project scheme.

In addition to a horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), kaziranga has a large population of tigers, elephants, leopards, leopard cat, buffalo, gaur, sloth bear, black bear, sun bear, Hoolock, rhesus macaque, common langur, crowned langur, swamp deer. , sambar, barking deer, hog deer, common otter, clawless otter, wild boar, python, etc.

Kaziranga National Park is also known to be a paradise for watching rare and exotic birds. Some birds commonly seen in the park are the little egret, tobo duck, osprey, spotted billed pelican, darter, heron, brahmini duck, pied brahmini duck, white-necked helper stork , the gray partridge, the pheasant, the cormorant, the black-necked stork assistant. , bengal florican, lesser helper stork and jungle birds etc.
