John Muir (1838-1914), “The Father of our National Parks,” was America’s most famous and influential naturalist and conservationist.

He is known for his exciting adventures in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California and for his travels around the world in search of the beauty of nature. John Muir taught about protecting our natural heritage. Yosemite, Sequoia, Mount Rainier, Petrified Forest, and Grand Canyon National Parks exist largely in response to his efforts.

President Theodore Roosevelt was inspired by Muir, and our nation acquired several excellent conservation programs because of the connection. A great tribute to this great man is that he is depicted on the reverse side of the California State Quarter.

In 1892, John Muir and others founded the Sierra Club, “to brighten the mountains.” John Muir was the club’s first president, a position he held until his death in 1914.

The Sierra Club of Muirs has continued to help establish a number of new National Parks and a National Wildlife Preservation System. His life reminds us of the important things that one person can do.

If you want a safe and healthy community to live in, with smart energy solutions to combat global warming and a lasting legacy for America’s wild places, then you need to become a member of the Sierra Club.

Three Conservation Initiatives are currently being promoted, and they are:

1) – Smart energy solutions, to change our dependence on fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy fuels.

2)-Protect the Wildlife and Habitat of the United States.

3) – Fight Pollution and create safe and healthy communities.

With all the pollutants in the air and chemicals in the groundwater, it’s strange that more people haven’t joined the green movement. The reason could be that not everyone knows where to start when it comes to going green. There is no better place to start than right here. The Sierra Club is a nonprofit corporation and donations are tax deductible.
