Can children share a room without a war?

Double with bunk beds

Bunk beds and roll-away beds are great for kids sharing a room, especially if each child can have their own bunk bed. In this way both children can have a sleepover, without invading each other’s space. Another fun idea is that they can invite each other to their bunk, affirming their individuality and boundaries. Even if there is only one bunk bed in the room, it still separates the siblings and creates the feeling of a private space for each.

Avoid clutter

When children share a room, it means they have twice as many toys, books, etc. This inevitable means duplicating chaos and disorder. Fortunately, a great way to avoid clutter is to furnish your bedroom with enough storage space. Provide each of your children with their own container, toy chest, or storage box to store their toys. This will inspire your children to take care of their toys, as well as teach them to clean up after themselves. This way, the room remains (mostly) tidy and the kids won’t argue about “what is who is”.

Extra storage with your beds

Storage beds are the wonderful and ingenious combination of extra storage and a fold out bed. This translates to more space available for children, as the storage drawers can be ‘stowed away’ rather than taking up additional space in the bedroom. You also have the added benefit of an extra bed, to make sleepovers easier.

Transform one room into two

Simply dividing a shared bedroom with a room divider is a simple and effective way to create a personal / individual space for each child. This also means that you will not have to make serious modifications to the building, as you can buy a divider with an interesting and modern design. Alternatively, you can also use a large bookcase / shelf set, giving you even more storage space. Of course, you can combine the concepts of room divider and bunk beds and create enough sleeping space for every kid’s sleepover too.

Involve children

As mentioned above, children need to express their individuality. Allowing each child to provide input from their side of the bedroom will help them do this. Remember that most of the time, children have their own ‘style’ and aesthetic, and they want to add to the theme / motif of their room. Having two definite sides of the room will once again avoid sibling rivalry of who is in whose space. There are many simple yet transformative ways to differentiate the sides of the bedroom. Get creative – use interesting paint designs, vinyl prints, wallpaper, or even walls of different colors on each side with an original design.
