Due to this economy, many people are having to deal with the fact that they need to start looking for a job that gives them that sense of security and helps them become financially independent. Many are starting their own businesses, but find themselves in more debt than when they started.

I have lived in Binghamton, New York for 15 years. When I moved here, I went to Broome High School and Community College. After college, I started working for local companies like IBM and Lockheed Martin, the two largest companies in the Southern Tier. I had no idea where life would take me, but I kept moving forward and working to the best of my ability. It’s interesting how many people in this area are so dependent on these big companies, plan to work 30+ years in a cubicle and retire with a pension and their 401K savings. They buy houses, cars and live a lifestyle beyond their means, not knowing what the future holds for these companies and themselves.

In 2009, Lockheed Martin made a major layoff, one that had never happened before in the company’s history in Owego, New York. Many people had to move and find work elsewhere and put their families on the right track because there was no work in the local area.

So who’s hiring in Binghamton? Where to go? You can take a look at the classified ads in the Press and Sun Bulletin and many other online websites, but really, there aren’t many high-paying jobs out there unless you want to get into the health field.

This area is great for raising a family, the schools are excellent, there are many attractions for the family. Although, the jobs that do exist in Binghamton are mostly temporary positions. The most I have seen here are manufacturing companies that start by paying employees $8.00 an hour to do hard jobs and these jobs are the most stressful.

If you are looking for a job in this local area, you would think about finding a job that allows you to work from home. Unfortunately most of the jobs in this area that will allow you to do that are these big companies and you need to have a degree to do it. According to statistics in the government data, the average salary for jobs in Binghamton is $25,894.

When I realized that life is too short to sit in a cubicle for more than 8 hours and that I could no longer depend on a weekly salary that would soon be over because the company was reorganizing, merging and making big changes that would impact me and the whole community. The southern tier relies on these large corporations to bring business to the area. Unfortunately, due to the economy and the government, these companies are making changes like no other. So I decided to go ahead and start looking for an online business that I can operate from home.
