Tips for trimming hedges easily and safely

Before you begin, read the owner’s manual if possible to understand how the machine works and the nuances with that particular model. Add fuel if needed, or plug in an electric model. Send all children and pets inside and check the weather forecast.

Start at the top of one side and sweep in one direction with measured speed. Don’t go from one side to another.

Hold the computer straight, not at an angle, to avoid a slanted or sunken appearance.

Don’t make the top narrower than the bottom. It should look like an inverted cone.

Avoid the lollipop look unless it’s a topiary.

Remove all dead and loose branches and clippings at the end. Air and sun must be able to circulate through the branches.

Wear safety gear. This includes gloves, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, and a head covering.

Do not use hedge trimmers in inclement weather conditions. The operator could slip on wet grass and lose balance, causing injury.

For electric models, make sure the area where the cable runs is free of water, snow, and excess moisture.

Trim only excess hedges. Do not cut more than 6 inches at a time with the hedge trimmer. Being too zealous can result in a very small bush with damaged branches too thick to cut with a hedge trimmer.

Do not cut bushes in the hottest part of summer. The plants are already stressed, and this could lead to injury or even death.

Do not cut flowering bushes. This will not only take away their natural beauty, but could prevent future blooms, depending on the species.

Properly dispose of clippings when the job is done. Use them in compost or shred them with a shredder for nutrients and protection from washouts in gardens or around trees on a slope.
