The history of beds

Now that we know how they made the bed frames, let’s see how they made the mattresses. The first mattresses were made of cane, hay, straw, and feathers. Just think how uncomfortable it would be, bits of straw, hay and feathers poking you at night while you slept.

The Roman Empire then decides to experiment some more. They invented the waterbed. The sleeper would lie on the mattress filled with warm water until asleep and then moved from the water bed to a cradle where he or she was rocked to sleep. Thus you have the first water mattress. Now let’s go forward in time. In 1865, the first coil spring for mattresses was invented and patented. Next, in the 1930s, innerspring mattresses were built. Now we have these today.

There are now many different types of mattresses available in many different types of sizes. Today, the queen is the most popular size mattress chosen. We have bunk beds, air mattresses, sleeping beds and we still have the famous water bed. There are beds that are also made to live in tight or small places. These beds are called Murphy beds. The Murphy bed folds into the wall, making making a bed easy. Teenagers would love this type of bed! Who would have thought that the history of the bed was so interesting. When I researched this story, I was surprised that the Egyptians were the inventors of the bed.
