Smartphone Operating Systems – Whoops! Looking at the Windows Phone 7 Series operating system

Microsoft is obviously known for the operating system that runs on 95% of computers, in fact, you are most likely running Microsoft Windows or Vista right now. Microsoft is not always thought of as a smartphone operating system giant, but they are definitely going for this market share in a big way. Its new Windows Phone 7 Series operating system, specially designed for smartphones, seems to be on top.

This new operating system is very different from the boring old “business” look of the operating system on your computer, notes a recent article in the New York Times. In the recent New York Times article; “After Fumble, Microsoft Redoes Phone Software,” by Ashlee Vance, published on February 28, 2010, seemed to signal Microsoft’s redemption in the smartphone operating system market.

The article said; “Microsoft’s new smartphone software, Windows Phone 7 Series, turns a phone into something like an electronic butler that tries to anticipate user needs.” Microsoft had 20% of the smartphone market share and the little iPhone beaten up by Apple really took over that, as did Google’s phone. But this new operating system from Microsoft may appeal to savvy personal technicians again.

The first users of the new iPhone seem to be very happy, but Microsoft seems to be ready to face this new challenge. Depending on the strength of the value for you, the smartphone consumer, this could change the dynamics for companies like Motorola, which has shown some pretty dismal quarterly losses and has taken a hit in the market. Nokia has done that too, but its worldwide sales are doing well even with the impact of market share as the pie of new global mobile phone users has nothing but blue skies ahead with a clear upward trend.

Now the question for new smartphone buyers is whether they want “tiles” like on the Windows Phone 7 Series operating system, or “icons” on their touchscreen like on the iPhone. And let’s face it, Apple users and many of its early adopters of personal technology are loyal, Apple is a cult, it’s a religion, Microsoft’s operating system isn’t the reason you buy a smartphone, it’s just the system that runs it. If you buy a smartphone for the features of the phone and it comes with Microsoft’s operating system, you’re happy. It’s a different dynamic with Apple’s iPhone.
