How does a DVR work?

Since many households will be trading in their old TVs for fancy new digital TVs, doesn’t it make sense that it’s time to trade in the VHS system for a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) as well? This device actually works like a VCR and will record shows (and allow you to watch one show while recording another) with the click of a button, just like a VCR. The main difference is that the DVR system uses an HDR or hard drive recorder and digitally records all of your favorite shows. These systems record programming in real time. There are no tapes to buy, rewind or fast forward. You have hundreds of hours to spare instead of six at a time. The DVR also allows you to record programs in real time. That means you can pause or rewind the show at any point during the show. Why can you even pause live TV while you go out for a drink?

This device is sold separately from a cable or satellite receiver, although some companies may give you one free as a promotion. To set it up, connect your cable or satellite line to the DVR, and then plug it into a nearby outlet, just as you would a VCR. Now, if you choose to keep your DVR when upgrading, you may need to take additional installation steps. Some viewers may want a VCR, DVR and DVD system connected at the same time. After all, VHS tapes are selling for lower prices than ever!

How many hours of use does the recording device give you? Cable companies and satellite providers may differ, but for the most part, these devices contain around 300 hours of space to record all of your favorite shows. As stated, DVRs give you the option to rewind and pause live shows. How about fast forward? Obviously live TV cannot be fast-forwarded! However, recorded shows and movies on demand can be fast-forwarded just like a pre-recorded DVD.

Another good option for cable and satellite DVRs is channel scan capabilities. This is a unique option that extends far beyond the realm of recording technology and truly creates an interactive menu of entertainment for home viewers. Some satellite and cable providers now have an interactive currently playing program guide that you can program to find specific series or movies. You can search for an entire lineup for a particular actor, like Nicole Kidman or Jamie Foxx, and instantly catch one of these shows. In addition, you can search by director or even by theme. So, if the family is in the mood for a good gangster movie, they could (a) look up The Godfather, (b) look up Coppola or Scorsese, or (C) look up Robert DeNiro. (And if your family is looking for Godfather movies, then it’s best not to argue about the remote.)

Some cable and satellite providers are even branching out into online programming, where users can control the DVR system from their cell phones or PDAs. Now is the time to order premium television and enjoy feature programming like the stars do.
