Extraordinary Measures: An Extraordinary Film

My boyfriend and I spent a typical weekend afternoon at the mall, with one exception. We saw an extraordinary movie called Extraordinary Measures. It stars Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser and is based on a true story.

Fraser’s character, John Crowley, is a brilliant business executive who has two sons with a rare medical condition called Pompe Syndrome. Harrison Ford stars as Robert Stonehill, a researcher who may have a cure, but lacks funding. Together, the two try to make big business sit up and take notice in time to save Crowley’s children.

I have always been a fan of most Harrison Ford movies. I could do without a partner, of course, like Hollywood Homicide. I’ve also started to think, in recent years, that he’s losing his touch a bit. However, I am corrected. This movie seemed to me like the old Harrison had returned. It reminded me a lot of some of his classic works, like Concerning Henry.

Meanwhile, I’ve always hated Brendan Fraser. He was torn to see this movie because he didn’t think he could tolerate it. I’m used to him being in ridiculous comedies like George of the Jungle. They have their place, but I didn’t think he would fit into this kind of role after that. I’m glad to say I was wrong. He was outstanding and I have a new respect for his acting skills.

One of the great things I loved about this movie is that it showed how hard it is to get past big business and be heard as a little guy. I myself have a rare medical condition and although the two conditions are not related, I felt like I was watching my own personal battle on the big screen. I hope that seeing this film will make more people work together to find solutions to many of the world’s problems.
