Determining Your Kitchen Cabinet Costs and Countertop Budget

When trying to figure out what your new kitchen cabinets and countertops will cost, there are many things to consider. The materials your new cabinets are made of will be the biggest factor in determining costs. Although wood is still the most used material of all kitchen furniture, there are now many more options to choose from.

Your kitchen is the most expensive room in your house to build or remodel. This is due to the fact that, on average, you will spend about half of your total kitchen budget on your cabinets. So if you have a total kitchen budget of $20,000, then about $10,000 should be allocated to your cabinets and countertops. It doesn’t mean you have to spend that much, you can spend more or less if you want. If you spend more, other aspects of your kitchen, like countertops, will suffer. If you spend less on your cabinets, you may not be getting the best kitchen cabinets available.

You should also take into account the fact that just like anything else in construction or renovation costs, you will have many options to upgrade or add to. With your kitchen cabinets you can add things like upgraded wood quality, superior finishes, custom cabinet organizers and much more. Every time you choose to upgrade and increase costs compared to what you had budgeted for, something else in the kitchen will suffer.

When budgeting for your kitchen cabinet, be sure to keep in mind that you don’t want to spend $20,000 of your $25,000 kitchen budget on top-of-the-line kitchen cabinets, and then put in the cheapest counter because it will look a lot of space. And the reverse is also trying…if you buy the cheapest kitchen cabinets available, then add an expensive marble countertop, it will look disproportionate to the overall look of your kitchen.
