Bishop, California is a city of 3,500 people on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada mountains. At an elevation of 4,147 feet, Bishop is located in the Owens Valley, near the Nevada border. With the Sierra Nevada to the west rising to nearly 14,000 feet, and the White Mountains to the east, the highest point of which is White Mountain Peak at 14,242 feet, you have a spectacular setting. Bishop, California is a central hub for many of California’s top destinations including: Yosemite, King’s Canyon, Sequoia and Death Valley National Parks.

Bishop is an extremely popular place for recreation and serves as a gateway for activities such as hiking, rock climbing, skiing, hunting, and fishing. The Owens River flows through the east end of town and is well known for fly fishing. Bishop is located on US Highway 395, forty-two miles southeast of Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort, one of California’s most popular ski destinations. Sitting in the rain shadow east of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Bishop has a dry climate. Its low elevation, compared to the surrounding mountainous regions, prevents it from receiving much snow in the winter (it averages nine inches per year). By contrast, in the summer, it is quite warm with temperatures averaging in the upper 90s.

Bishop hosts two major events each year: Mule Days Celebration, held Memorial Day weekend, and the Tri-County Fair, for Inyo, Alpine and Mono counties, held out over Labor Day weekend. During a busy day, the City of Bishop will attract more than 30,000 visitors for various events and recreational activities. Bishop is a great place to visit or live.
