The Parroquia de San Patricio is one of the truly beautiful parishes in Granada. Like the quintessential Caribbean destination, the city’s coastline is magnificently adorned with beautiful bays. In addition to being the northernmost parish on the island, San Patricio is also close to volcanic cones and craters, giving it extraordinary scenery. Some of the popular volcanic formations include Lake Antoine and Punchbowl. St. Patrick Parish is also home to most of the island’s cocoa and nutmeg production.

Sauteurs is the largest town and the capital of the parish. Just north of this city is the historic Leapers Hill or Carib’s Leap. This is the sheer cliff where 40 Carib Indians plunged into the sea to commit suicide rather than face a life conquered by the French colonizers in 1651. The act was truly brave and tragic at the same time and is remembered even after centuries have passed. . . Visiting Leaper Hill these days also gives you the chance to see a model Kalinago/Carib village. There is also an interpretive center that allows you to view artifacts and purchase indigenous crafts and local snacks.

For a refreshing swim, the beautiful coast of Granada is definitely the ideal place. But if you want to enjoy a therapeutic bath that soothes your body aches and calms your mind, head to the sulfur springs of San Patricio. There are over 5 natural sulfur springs to choose from, specifically located in River Sallee. One great thing about this place is that you can come here anytime as it is open 24/7. There’s even a bar set up here to sell refreshments, in case you get hungry after soaking in the warm water for hours!

One attraction that offers tourists not only a valuable piece of Grenada history, but also a genuinely wonderful experience is the River Antoine Rum Distillery. Rum is known to be the alcohol of choice in the Caribbean; and the rum-making tradition of this private distillery dates back to the 19th century. It is therefore not surprising that it is one of the oldest operating distilleries in the entire Caribbean.

One of the deals here is a guided tour of this distillery, especially since it costs only EC$5 (about $2 US$). The tour gives you a comprehensive look at the rum-making process, which begins with harvesting the sugar cane. You’ll also learn about the fermentation process and witness how workers bottle the finished product. At the end of this fascinating tour, you will also receive a free sample.

But keep in mind that the rum produced at the River Antoine Rum Distillery is different than the rum products you normally see in supermarkets and duty-free stores. River Antoine’s rum is clearly much stronger. To give you an idea, the rum here is produced in proofs from 120 to 150 proofs. Fortunately, the distillery also produces less potent versions for visitors to purchase and take home when they leave.

The River Antoine Rum Distillery is located near Lake Antoine, on the northeast coast of the island of Grenada. It’s only about an hour’s drive from St. George. Tours are available Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm The tour is well worth the money.
