Youth Soccer Coach – Recruit new players during the off-season

We’re just coaching little boy sports, but let’s face it, you need studs to win. A great coach cannot win with terrible talent. A bad coach can ruin a great talent. This will be the subject of another article. I’m not a “win at all costs” type coach, but I try to win every match I coach.

I know that sounds terrible, but out of season, make sure you recruit studs. You want to try to get the best basketball, football, baseball and hockey players or any sport in the area. A great way to find these kids is to get involved in coaching for other youth sports. You will know which of these children are aggressive and fast. I have coached youth basketball longer than youth soccer and this has always been a soccer gold mine.

The second way to recruit players is your current players. All kids want to have their friends on the same youth soccer team. Encourage your current team to spread the word. Go see your next players in their other sports and take notice of the cleats. Have your next players ask the studs to join the team.

You can check with your league to see if there are cap limits. If not, you might want to take a look at some kids from neighboring towns. This is especially effective if the neighboring city does not have a youth soccer program or plays in a different league. At some point there is better competition or their league may offer a better weight/age advantage, so these kids will switch leagues.
